Snapshots and Backups are found under the My Files section in the sidebar menu, organized into Snapshot, Backups, and Image tabs. They are crucial for protecting your data.

a. Understanding Snapshots vs. Backups at Raff Technologies

  • Snapshots: Point-in-time copies, likely stored within the primary infrastructure for quick operations. You can snapshot the main OS volume (vda) and attached data volumes separately. Good for quick rollbacks or creating templates (Images). Snapshots are persistent.

  • Backups: Designed for scheduled data protection and longer-term retention. You can schedule backups daily or weekly within a specified 4-hour time window. Backups allow for full restoration.

b. Creating a Snapshot

  1. Navigate to My Files -> Snapshot tab.

  2. Find the option to create a snapshot (this might involve selecting the source VM/Volume first).

  3. Give the snapshot a descriptive name.

  4. Confirm creation.

c. Creating/Managing Backups

  1. Navigate to My Files -> Backups tab.

  2. Look for options to set up backup policies or schedules for your VMs/Volumes.

  3. Configure the schedule:

    • Frequency: Daily or Weekly.

    • Time Window: Select a 4-hour window for the backup operation.

    • Retention: Define how long backups should be kept.

  4. Assign the VMs or Volumes you want to be included in the backup schedule.

d. Restoring from a Snapshot or Backup

  • Restoring from Snapshot/Backup: You can perform full restores of the OS (as an Image) or individual Volumes.

    1. Navigate to My Files and the appropriate tab (Snapshot or Backups).

    2. Locate the desired snapshot or backup recovery point.

    3. Select the Restore action.

    4. Follow the prompts to restore. This typically involves creating a new VM (from an OS snapshot/backup) or a new Volume (from a volume snapshot/backup). You would then attach the restored volume if necessary.

e. Best Practices

  • Regularity: Use the scheduling feature for Backups. Take Snapshots before significant changes.

  • Retention: Set appropriate retention policies for your backups based on needs and cost.

  • Naming: Use clear, consistent names for snapshots and backups.

  • Testing: Regularly test your restore procedures.
